Opera singer, people’s artist of USSR Zurab Sotkilava died Monday in Moscow at the age of 80 years.
“Died Zurab Lavrentievich Sotkilava, a great actor of the Bolshoi theatre. He had a severe illness which he fought until the end”, – said General Director of the Bolshoi theatre Vladimir urin. On the Internet there is information stating that the actor had pancreatic cancer.
At the current time point no accurate information on how, where and when will be held the ceremony of farewell and funeral of people’s artist of the USSR Zurab Sotkilava.
In 2015, it became known that Sotkilava was diagnosed with a brain tumor, the actor underwent a surgery in Germany, he then underwent chemotherapy in Moscow, in the summer of 2015, the singer announced that he had conquered cancer. In February of this year Sotkilava said continues to struggle with cancer.
Zurab Lavrentievich Sotkilava was born in 1937, in Sukhumi. He started his career as a professional footballer, but due to injuries was forced to leave the sport. In 1965, he debuted on the stage of the Georgian Opera and ballet theatre, 1974 he was artist of the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow.
Sotkilava was awarded the order “For merits before Fatherland” of II-IV degree and several other national and international honorary awards. In 1979 he received the title of people’s artist of the USSR, for a long time worked as the Professor of the Moscow Conservatory.
