Participant of beauty pageant Miss Minnesota USA Halima Aden became the first in the history of the contest participant, which took the stage in hijab and burkini. Nineteen-year-old beauty was born in Somalia, and at the age of seven years old with his parents emigrated to America.
Religious features he started to feel before, and for a long time thought it was bad. Like most of her fellow immigrants, Halima believed that to stand out from the crowd is bad, but over time she changed their opinion.
“For a long time I believed the other to be wrong, but as I grew older, I realized that all people are different. If everyone was the same it would be boring. I want to say that hijab is not a symbol of oppression, and a conscious choice. My choice. I want to show that you can be both beautiful and modest,” said Halima.
In the words of the girls, the new generation of immigrants quickly assimiliate and americantires, but she made the choice to preserve their culture and traditions.
